Overview

Founded in 1802 as the Derpt University foundation, in 1918 the university was moved to Voronezh. In 1930 its Medical Faculty became an independent institute, acquiring an Academy status in 1994. The Academy has a well-established reputation for providing high quality medical teaching, learning and research. It is one of Russia's top ten medical schools. Since its inception, the Academy has graduated over 40,000 medical specialists, including foreign specialists from 28 countries of Europe, Asia and Africa.

Each year, the Faculty enrolls 290 to 330 students, including 190 students who receive a fully state-funded scholarship. Full-time training is supported during a 6-year period. Instruction is provided by 282 faculty members, among those there are 41 Doctors of Medical Science, 155 PhDs in Medicine, 43 Professors and 57 Associate Professors. At present the Faculty’s leading specialists and chairmen are well-known due to their achievements in different medical fields: hyperbaric oxygenation, treatment of respiratory diseases, cardiology, ecology, pharmacological issues of air and space flights, treatment of infertility, laser therapy, abdominal surgery. Faculty members practice medicine in Voronezh and the surrounding region.

Recognition

Medical degrees received at VSMA are recognized worldwide. The Academy is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, 9th Edition, published by the World Health Organization.VSMA is well-coordinated with the German Medical Association.

Dedication to International Students

In the year of foundation — 1994. International students are offered training in the following programs: «General Medicine», «Pediatrics», «Dentistry» and «Pharmacy». The Academy has educated 457 specialists from 28 countries of the World. This includes 275 foreign students earning their MD qualification. Among them there are 43 students graduating from the Academy’s Preparatory Department; 314 students were awarded MD Diplomas and 106 were qualified as Pharmacists. There are 34 residency course graduates and 3 postgraduate students defending their PhD theses.

Since the language of instruction is Russian, the Russian language Department was established in the Faculty to provide Russian language courses for students throughout the entire Academy.
